United Airlines will accept one kiteboard or one bag containing equipment used in kiteboarding as checked baggage.

If the kiteboard or kiteboard container is more than 50 pounds (23 kilograms) or is greater than 62 total linear inches (158 centimeters) (length + width + height), the item will be subject to additional service charges for oversized and overweight bags. Service charges for first, second and extra checked bags may apply. These charges may add up quickly ($200+ for Oversized Fee, and $100-$200+ for overweight fee, depending on destination). If the kiteboard or kiteboard container weighs less than 50 pounds (23 kilograms) and is less than 62 (158 centimeters) total linear inches, standard bag service charges may apply.

Flights to/from California
As of October 5 2018, United accepts surfboards free of charge on flights to/from California. Flights connecting through California are not eligible. If traveling with a kiteboard, you may be able to check it in without paying the crazy oversized fee, if you can convince the check-in agent that you are flying with a surfboard.

If the kiteboard or kiteboard container weighs less than 50 pounds (23 kg) and is less than 62 (158 cm) total linear inches (L + W + H), standard bag service charges may apply.

The board must be well padded or the entire board must be encased in a suitable container to avoid scratching. United Airlines is not liable for damage to a kiteboard or kiteboard equipment.

Excess Valuation may not be purchased for a kiteboard or kiteboard equipment.

Note: On United Airlines flights, kiteboards greater than 115 inches (292 cm) in length will not be accepted. On United Express flights, kiteboards greater than 80 inches (203 cm) in length will not be accepted.

Kiteboards are not allowed during excess baggage embargo periods when no excess baggage is allowed. Kiteboards will be accepted to Costa Rica during an embargo period.

Kiteboards in "Golf" Bags
United Airlines accepts golf equipment to exceed the size allowance without incurring oversize baggage fees. In this case, a Kiteboarding "Golf" Travel Bag could be a good idea to save on excess baggage fees, to pass off your kitesurf gear as golf equipment. Keep in mind that you may be asked to open your bag at check-in to show the golf equipment.

Be sure to note that United Airlines specifically states in it's golf clubs policy that only golf bags containing golf equipment are subject to the oversize fee waiver, and golf bags not containing golf equipment will be charged the oversize baggage fee.
