Ethiopian Airlines flies both domestic routes as well as international flights to destinations in Africa. It is a member of the Star Alliance network of airlines.

One piece of carry-on baggage is acceptable free of charge provided it is suitable for placement in the over-head rack or under the passenger's seat. The sum of the three dimensions (L+W+H) shall not exceed 115 cm and/or 45 inches and weight must not exceed 7kgs (15 lb.).
In addition, passengers may also carry free of charge, items of personal effects for use in flight, as listed below:
A handbag (Laptop bag), pocket book or purse
A small camera and/or a pair of binoculars
A reasonable amount of reading material for the flight
Infant's food for consumption in flight
Infant's carrying basket
A fully collapsible cabin wheel chair and/or a pair of crutches, and /or braces or other prosthetic device provided that passengers are dependent on them
One laptop without accessories and attachments

Food items are not allowed to be carried in the cabin/inside the hand baggage.
Hand baggage beyond the dimension and weight indicated above will not be accepted in the cabin and will be loaded in the aircraft along with the checked in bag and if the total piece and weight of the bags exceeds the free baggage allowance, the excess shall be charged.
Please affix your name and address label on and inside your baggage. This will help us identify the bag in case the baggage tag/label attached outside is detached or lost.
Please do not put valuable items such as money, jewelry, cameras and other expensive electronic items in your check-in baggage. If hand baggage is collected at the check-in counter or at the gate due to its size and weight being above the allowed limit (as mentioned above), please make sure to take out all valuables and important documents before your hand bag is sent as checked-in baggage. The airline will not be liable for the damage and loss of valuable items in the hand baggage.
Any type of liquid material is not allowed to be carried in the hand baggage if it is more than 3 ounces (85 ml) container and total number of pieces of the liquid container is above three and undeclared. However, medications, baby formula, and food are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding 3 ounces (85 ml) provided it is declared and presented to security personnel.
It is strictly forbidden to carry toy or replica guns, razor blades, household cutlery, knives, scissors, knitting needles etc. in your hand baggage.
Two bags are allowed free of charge on all flights to/from the USA and Canada. Economy passengers are limited to 23k/50lbs per bag, and Cloud 9 passengers are allowed up to 32kg/70lbs per bag.

The price of a ticket includes the transportation of a certain amount of baggage in the cargo hold of the aircraft. This allowance differs depending on the booking class and the destination.
Free baggage allowance on all other international routes and within Ethiopia
On Ethiopian free baggage allowance is set by the weight or piece concept whichever is applicable to the sector.
Local restrictions on baggage weight
Please note that the maximum weight limit per single baggage is 32 kg for business class and 23 kg for economy class on all flights across the Atlantic (outbound and return, as well as transfers). Baggage exceeding this weight limit will not be accepted for check- in.
This regulation does not change the maximum weight limit for the free baggage allowance.
Baggage Allowance & Fees for flight to/from USA
For Ethiopian-ticketed passengers on Ethiopian-operated flights (ET) the first and second checked bag in Cloud Nine and Economy is free. In Cloud Nine and Economy, the fee for any additional checked bags is USD150 to USD200 each way, depending on the passenger's ultimate destination in Africa. For ShebaMiles Gold, ShebaMiles Silver [and Star Gold] passengers, the first checked bag above the complimentary (free) checked bag allowance shown above is also free of charge. Additional baggage fee may apply in the event of a stopover on an international itinerary.
Codeshare/International flights exceptions
For passengers on interline-ticketed or codeshare-ticketed (ET*) itineraries out of the U.S., additional airline fees for baggage may apply. If United Airlines or Continental Airlines is the operating airline on the first leg of the itinerary (UA, UA*, CO, CO*), see the Continental or United baggage rules. Free baggage allowance on long-haul flights
For numerous long-haul flights the Piece Concept applies. This means that adult passenger may check in up to two pieces of baggage in addition to his carry-on baggage free of charge. Please check the chart below for the allowed weights per piece.
Passengers to and from America and Canada
Any piece in excess of the specified limit above shall be considered as excess and if the weight of the extra baggage or the free baggage allowance is more than 32 kgs (70 Lbs), Ethiopian Airlines will not accept the baggage for carriage. In addition items packed in carton boxes, plastic bags, and any other poor packing material are not acceptable for carriage.
Additional free baggage allowance for Sheba Miles and Miles & More members
Ethiopian Gold members, LH Honorable (Hon.) circle member, LH Senator shall be given 20kgs, and Ethiopian Silver members shall receive 15kgs additional to the free baggage allowance. In addition to the free baggage allowance the above passenger will be handled with special priority.
ET-gold, ET- silver and LH honorable and LH senator, are entitled 1 extra additional free baggage allowance per the piece system, but weight will be limited to the class of service.
Free baggage allowance for an infant
An infant, not entitled to a seat is allowed to 10kgs of free baggage allowance and in addition one fully collapsible stroller/push chair, which may be carried in the passenger cabin subject to availability of space.
Infant, paying 10% of the applicable fare and not occupying seat is entitled to one checked bag (piece) weighing 10kgs,the sum of the 3 dimensions of which does not exceed 45 inches (115cms) plus one fully collapsible / pushchair, which may be carried in the passenger cabin subject to availability of space.

Excess baggage on flights to/from Canada and the US is charged a flat rate of $150 for extra bag. There is also an additional $60 overweight fee if your bags weigh between 23-32kg (50-70lbs).

The applicable charge for baggage weight in excess of the free baggage allowance varies for each sector except for travel to/from the USA/Canada where the piece system shall apply.
For travelers to US and Canada
Please note that excess baggage charge applies to the following conditions:
USD150.00 and USD210.00 will apply for each additional piece (bag) weighing up to 23 kgs (50Lbs) and 24 kgs up to 32 kgs (51-70Lbs) respectively on the sectors Addis Ababa to Washington D.C or vice versa.
Between USD150.00 and USD200.00 and between USD210.00 and USD260.00 will apply for each additional piece (bag) weighing up to 23 kgs (50Lbs) and 24 kgs up to 32 kgs (51-70Lbs) respectively on the sector from Washington D.C. to any other destination other than Addis Ababa on Ethiopian Airlines' route network. Please note that the rate varies based on the destination.
USD200.00 shall apply for each additional piece (bag) weighing 23 kgs (50Lbs) on the sector Addis Ababa to a destination beyond Washington D.C. within the US.
For passengers originating from USA, outside Washington D.C the excess baggage rate from origin up to Washington D.C is determined by the carrier you are using and the origin you are departing from.
In Economy Class, when the number of pieces is within the free baggage allowance while the weight of the bags is over 23 kgs but less than 32 kgs (51 - 70Lbs) the excess baggage charge will be USD60.00 per each bag.

Sporting Equipment and Bulky Baggage
One set of skiing equipment (one pair of skis, one pair of ski poles and/or one pair of boots) will be charged at the applicable rate for three (3) kilograms of excess baggage. If you carry more than one set, the normal excess baggage charge shall apply for the extra weight.
One set of golfing equipment (one golf bag and one pair of golf shoes) will be charged at the applicable rate for six (6) kilograms of excess baggage. If weight of golfing equipment exceeds 15 kg the normal excess charge shall apply.
If you take along particularly bulky or damageable baggage (bicycles, surf and snowboards, skis, large musical instruments, wardrobe trunks etc.) you may have to pay an additional fee and register your baggage with us prior to your departure.
Excess baggage charges must be assessed and paid for before boarding.

Government Excess Baggage Authorization (GEBA) - if you are traveling under the auspices of any Government you can use GEBA to pay for excess baggage.
Baggage Excess Value Charge
If you want to declare the value of checked baggage, the valuation charge shall be assessed at 0.50 United States Dollars for each 100, - United States Dollars or portion thereof.
Acceptance of value declared baggage for carriage shall be limited to Ethiopian destinations only.
Especially large and heavy pieces of baggage
Baggage will be accepted for check-in, only if it properly contains and prevents damage to the contents. Light cardboard boxes, paper bags and similar non-durable materials are not acceptable. If the passenger so insists, it shall be accepted upon using Limited Release Tags, relieving Ethiopian from any damage claim.
Acceptance of items which may cause damage to other baggage will be refused unless properly packed.
Extremely bulky and oversized bags shall be forwarded by freight.
Transportation of pushchairs, wheelchairs or walking aids
Special equipment required by incapacitated passengers with the passenger, and/or should be readily and immediately attainable at transfer and destination points.
Passengers traveling with their own folding wheelchair or assistive device may request it to be carried in the passenger cabin where storage facilities are available. Such request will be handled on a 'first come first served' basis. Where such facilities do not exist, the wheelchair or assistive device will be loaded in the baggage hold where it is easily accessible for timely return to the passenger.
If crutches, canes and similar walking aids are stored in a special location in the cabin, the user of such aids should be assigned seats nearby, to permit quick access to the aids when needed.
