There are major changes to Hawaiian Airlines's Surfboards Policy in 2025, after the airline's merger with Alaska Airlines. Effective January 8 2025, Hawaiian Airlines will no longer charge any additional surfboard fees on any of its flights, either domestic or international. Surfboards are now accepted on all Hawaiian Airlines flights and count as a standard piece of checked luggage. Previously, surfboard fees ranged from $25-$475 one-way depending on the origin/destination of your flight.

Your surfboard may still incur a regular checked luggage fee (as if it were a suitcase), or it may be transported free of charge in place of a regular checked bag if you have a free checked luggage allowance included (free checked luggage allowance depends on your route, ticket class, loyalty status, or credit card used). No oversize fee applies to surfboards as long as the board bag is less than 115 linear inches (sum of Length + Width + Height). One limit that does apply for your boardbag to fly free is that it must weigh less than 23 kg / 50 lbs. Hawaiian's standard Overweight baggage fees still apply to surfboards that exceed the 23 kg / 50 lbs weight limit.

You may pack multiple boards into a single board bag, but keep in mind that the weight restrictions and overweight fees may apply.

Surfboard Size Restrictions on Hawaiian Airlines
Board bags are limited in size to a maximum length of 115 inches (292 cm). Hawaiian Airlines has removed the smaller size restriction for Ohana by Hawaiian flights. Most longboards will exceed the 115 inches limit (9'7"), so will not be able to travel.

Packing Surfboards for travel on Hawaiian Airlines
Use a surfboard bag that is a few inches longer than your board(s).

Pack board rails, nose and tail with light items such as swimming noodles, foam, towels or clothing.

Remove fins or properly protect them with materials like bubble wrap secured tightly.

Avoid placing hard or sharp objects inside your board bag.

Remember to finish packing your boards at home. Packing materials are not available at check-in counters.

Please note: Transportation of your board bag on your flight is subject to space availability. In the unlikely event they cannot accommodate your board bag on your flight, Hawaiian Airlines will place it on the next available flight. Once it has arrived at your destination, you will have to pick it up at the airport. Hawaiian Airlines does not provide ground delivery of your surfboards if they are delayed.

Please review the regular Hawaiian Airlines Baggage Fees page for standard baggage, oversize, and overweight fees which may apply.
