Hawaiian Airlines accepts surfboards as a piece of checked baggage. Depending on the origin and destination of your flights, different rules may apply for your surfboards.
Hawaiian Airlines has made major changes to its surfboard bag rules in November 2023 after a social media campaign from big-wave surfer Billy Kemper about Hawaiian Airlines's low surfboard baggage weight limit of only 50 lbs. The airline has now modified its policies, allowing surfboard bags weighing up to a maximum of 45 kg / 100 lbs, but there is a catch. Hawaiian's new surfboard bag fees are not a flat rate - the fee for your surfboard gets more expensive as your board bag gets heavier, and is split into 3 weight categories: [AMZ asins='B00HTA1Z6C,B00GGPK0V2,B00NIYJF6U,B0053TGSK4']
Less than 50 lbs (23 kg).
Between 50-70 lbs (32 kg).
Between 70-100 lbs (45 kg).
The price increases significantly for the 70-100 lbs option, and it is actually cheaper to pay for 2 x 50 lbs board bags than a single 100 lbs board bag on most routes, so don't recommend packing such a heavy board bag when flying with Hawaiian Airlines. If you are planning on bringing just a single extra-heavy board bag (up to 45 kg / 100 lbs), we recommend flying with Alaska Airlines instead.
When flying between Hawaii and Australia or New Zealand, your board bag is included in your free baggage allowance when your travel is nonstop, direct and/or with connecting service (maximum 24 hour connection time), and can weigh up to a maximum of 32 kg / 70 lbs. For U.S. and other international travel, the board bag fee is charged per board bag based on your destination and the weight of your board bag.
The surfboard bag fee that you will pay is per boardbag, regardless of the number of boards.

Surfboard Size Restrictions on Hawaiian Airlines
Board bags are limited in size to a maximum length of 115 inches (292 cm). Hawaiian Airlines has removed the smaller size restriction for Ohana by Hawaiian flights. Most longboards will exceed the 115 inches limit (9'7"), so will not be able to travel.
Packing Surfboards for travel on Hawaiian Airlines
Use a surfboard bag that is a few inches longer than your board(s).
Pack board rails, nose and tail with light items such as swimming noodles, foam, towels or clothing.
Remove fins or properly protect them with materials like bubble wrap secured tightly.
Avoid placing hard or sharp objects inside your board bag.
Remember to finish packing your boards at home. Packing materials are not available at check-in counters.
Please note: Transportation of your board bag on your flight is subject to space availability. In the unlikely event they cannot accommodate your board bag on your flight, Hawaiian Airlines will place it on the next available flight. Once it has arrived at your destination, you will have to pick it up at the airport. Hawaiian Airlines does not provide ground delivery of your surfboards if they are delayed.
