Air New Zealand accepts windsurfing gear in place of a regular suitcase as part of your free checked baggage allowance, but an Oversize Baggage fee will be charged. This is because the free Sports Equipment allowance is up to a maximum of 2.00 meters, above which the Oversize Fee applies (up to a maximum of 2.50 meters).

When bringing your windsurfing gear, be sure to note that the 23 kg / 50 lbs weight limit applies, so you'll either have to pack into 2 separate bags (board bag and quiver bag) or pay an Overweight Baggage fee for a heavy bag (max weight 32 kg / 70 lbs). Remember that packing into 2 bags will count as 2 items, so an Extra Bag fee may apply.
If necessary, we recommend buying your extra bag fee online ahead of time, as it is cheaper than at the airport. If you pack your masts together with the board, your quiver bag may even fit within the 2.00 meter limit to fly without paying a 2nd Oversize fee.

New Zealand domestic flights - $35 NZD per bag
Flights between New Zealand & Australia/Pacific Islands (except Perth & Tahiti) - $70 NZD per bag
Long haul flights (including flights between New Zealand and Perth or Tahiti) - $120 NZD per bag
Note: Some size restrictions apply if flying domestically on smaller aircraft, as items larger than 180 x 80 x 120 cm will not fit. Please contact Air New Zealand for assistance.
