Surfboards are accepted on Westjet flights as checked baggage when less than 9.8 feet (3 metres) long. However, it will not be cheap.
Westjet is known to be a customer-friendly airline and surfboards are sometimes accepted for just the standard checked bag fee plus the $50 surfboard handling fee, but according to their policies all standard Oversize and Overweight luggage fees also apply, so bringing your surfboard may end up costing you up to $250 + the standard checked luggage fee applicable to your flight. Westjet's standard checked baggage or extra piece fees apply, plus all applicable oversize ($100) and overweight ($100) fees (these fees are cumulative, both will be charged if both oversize AND overweight), and an additional flat handling fee of $50 CAD/USD will be applied to surfboards, paddleboards, kiteboards, wakeboards and wave skis, boogie/skimboards and windsurfers.
All boards must have the skeg/fin removed, be padded, and packed properly to prevent damage to the board and other baggage.
All applicable oversized, overweight and extra piece fees apply.
Oversize and overweight fees are about $100 each, and both will be charged if both oversize and overweight apply.
