Fishing equipment is accepted on-board Alaska Airlines flights as a regular piece of checked luggage. Fishing equipment may be checked-in as multiple piece and considered as a single piece in terms of baggage charges. Standard Alaska Airlines checked baggage fees apply, although oversize and overweight fees will be waived.
Fishing Equipment on Alaska Airlines
One piece of fishing equipment is defined as two rods, two reels, and one tackle box. Fishing equipment may exceed 62 linear inches, but no more than 115 linear inches (length + height + width), without incurring an oversize fee.

The standard $35 1st checked bag fee or $45 2nd checked bag fee will still be charged. If your fishing equipment is in addition to two standard checked bags, you will be charged a $150 3rd bag / additional bag fee.
These increased 1st and 2nd checked luggage fees ($35/$45 vs $30/$40) apply to all flights booked on/after January 2nd 2024.
The higher $150 3rd / Extra Bag fee applies on all Alaska Airlines flights purchased on/after June 30 2023. The previous extra bag fee of $100 still applies to flights purchased before June 30 2023.
Refer to our Alaska Airlines Baggage page for checked piece, overweight and oversize charges.
A fishing pole may also be taken on-board in place of a piece of standard carry-on luggage, as long as it can be safely accommodated in a proper stowage compartment in the cabin of the aircraft.
