Air New Zealand will accept your fishing gear free of charge as part of your regular free checked baggage allowance, in place of a regular suitcase. Your fishing rod case must be less than 2.00 meters long, and weigh less than 23 kg / 50 lbs.
If your fishing gear is in excess of your regular free checked bag allowance, you will have to pay the standard Extra Bag fee, as if it were an extra suitcase. [AMZ asins='B000E3E22A,B008BR23FY,B00YEH5PQO,B00SXZMQTM']
If your fishing gear weighs more than 23 kg / 50 lbs, Air New Zealand's standard Overweight Baggage fee will apply, up to a maximum weight of 32 kg / 70 lbs.
Your fishing rod case must be les than 2.00 meters to be brought free of charge. If longer than 2.00 meters, but less than 2.50 meters, it will be accepted but an Oversize Baggage fee will apply. Longer fishing rods will not be accepted, as must fly as Cargo.
On some smaller aircraft, such as the ones used on shorter domestic flights, there is a length limit of 1.80 meters due to the size of the aircraft. If the fishing rod case is narrow, it may be possible that fishing rods up to 2.20 m can be fit in, but this is not guaranteed.
