KLM will accept your bike for transport on its flights, however customers will no longer be able to check-in a bike as part of their ticketed baggage allowance - you will always be charged a special Bike Handling Fee. All bikes will now be charged as a "speciality" item; the same charges are applicable for flying with tandem bicycles.
Reserve Your Bike on KLM
Be sure to reserve your bicycle well ahead of time, as only a limited number of bicycles may be transported on each flight. You can reserve this via the "My Trips" section of the KLM website.

Please reserve the transportation of your bicycle or tandem at least 48 hours before departure via KLM Customer Contact Centre. You must always pay an excess baggage fee for a bicycle or tandem.
Packing Your Bicycle for KLM Flights
Bikes must be packed in a box, container or bag that is specifically designed for bike transportation. The maximum dimensions for this bike box are 176.5 x 23.0 x 101.5 cm (69 x 9 x 40 in). The best way to protect your bike is by using a hardcover casing. However, a softcover casing is also allowed if it includes an internal protective packing material.
Make sure that you turn the handlebars lengthwise along with the frame and that you remove pedals and other parts that are sticking out. We also recommend that you deflate the tyres, so they won't get damaged because of the pressure drop in the hold.
Special KLM bike boxes may be available at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol for EUR 20 each (176,5 x 23 x 101,5 cm / 69 x 9 x 40 inch). The KLM bike box weighs 4,5 kg (10 lbs).
E-Bikes on KLM
Please note that E-Bikes are not allowed for transportation, unless you remove the battery. In most cases you will not be able to bring the battery with you, as it most likely exceeds the 160 Wh limit for lithium batteries allowed on board. You can bring batteries up to 100 Wh in your carry-on bag. If you want to bring a lithium battery up to 160 Wh with you in your hand baggage, you need to request permission. Batteries larger than 160 Wh are never allowed.
KLM Bicycle Fees 2023 - by destination
On intercontinental flights, the prices for flying with a bike are relatively high, especially on flights between US and Europe. We recommend choosing an airline other than KLM if planning to fly with a bike on this route.
