Lufhansa accepts windsurf equipment as follows: a board, a sail, a boom, a mast, a gear bag.
Unfortunately, Lufthansa is not very windsurfer friendly (or sports enthusiast friendly airline in general), as the fees it charges for large sports equipment such as windsurf gear are extremely high. We do NOT recommend flying Lufthansa if planning to bring your windsurf gear, but if you already have your flight, be prepared by knowing how much to expect to pay. We recommend that you make an early reservation for the item of windsurf baggage you wish to take with you. You must register sports baggage up to 24 hours before departure. You may bring up to 2 board bags.
Sports baggage can be allowed for in your free baggage allowance provided that the number and weight do not exceed the free baggage specifications for your travel class. However, this does not apply if you are travelling on the Economy Class Light fare.
If it exceeds the free baggage allowance, the below charges apply:
Bulky sports baggage fees on Lufthansa (Boards longer than 2 meters)
Domestic routes (Germany) - EUR 110 / USD 126
Routes within Europe - EUR 130 / USD 149
Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia - EUR 175 / USD 201
Short intercontinental routes - EUR 250 / USD 287
Medium intercontinental routes - EUR 320 / USD 368 / CAD 480
Long intercontinental routes - EUR 400 / USD 460 / CAD 600
Routes to/from Japan - EUR 200 / USD 300
If it exceeds the maximum weight of 32 kg then the charges for cargo transport apply.
If you are booking your flight online and would like to take your windsurfing equipment with you, then please call your local Lufthansa Service Center after you have made your
online booking. Registering sports baggage: up to 24 hours before departure via the reservation hotline (+49 (0)69 - 86 799 799). Please specify your booking code.
