Virgin Atlantic claims to accept your surfboards as part of your free checked baggage allowance, however be mindful of the official size restrictions.
According to Virgin Atlantic's website, your board can't be larger than dimensions of 190cm x 75cm x 65cm (75" x 30" x 26") and 23kg in weight, meaning only boards under 6'3" are officially accepted. This means that your mid-length, funboard, or long board do not fit within the dimensions unfortunately. [AMZ asins='B00HTA1Z6C,B00GGPK0V2,B00NIYJF6U,B0053TGSK4']
If your surf board does fit within the dimensions, your surfboard bag can be brought in place of a regular suitcase as part of your free checked baggage allowance, or upon payment of the standard Extra Bag fee as if it were an extra suitcase. The weight limit is 23 kg / 50 lbs, otherwise an Overweight Baggage fee of 65 GBP / $100 USD will be charged.
Previously Virgin Atlantic accepted surfboards up to a maximum length of 277 cm (9 feet), but this is no longer the case unfortunately.
