British Airways claims to accept surfboards for free if within your free checked luggage allowance. Unfortunately, the size restrictions of 190 x 75 x 65 cm limit you to taking only shortboards. Longer surfboards will need to be sent as cargo.
The bag containing the board can be up to a maximum size of 190cm x 75cm x 65cm (75in x 29.5in x 25.5in). [AMZ asins='B00HTA1Z6C,B00GGPK0V2,B00NIYJF6U,B0053TGSK4']
If your surfboard bag weighs more than 23kg (51lb), it may incur a heavy bag charge of 65 GBP / 75 EUR / 100 USD / 100 CAD.
If your surfboard bag is within your free luggage allowance, it will be taken for free. Otherwise, the standard checked baggage fee (same as if it were a regular suitcase) will apply.
