Virgin Australia Kayak Fees and Policies

Virgin Australia will accept your kayak equipment within your checked baggage allowance, as long as it is within the accepted weight limit of 23 kg - otherwise an overweight fee applies (up to a maximum weight of 32 kg).

Aircraft Type - Maximum Length
Boeing 737 - 3.0 metres in length
Airbus A320 - 9.8 metres in length (depending on the flexibility of the item)
F100 - 6.0 metres in length (depending on the flexibility of the item)

If flying with oversized items, such as a kayak, you must contact the airline ahead of time to notify them of the size of the items you are planning to fly with.

Your kayak represents one piece of checked baggage, and may be exchanged for a standard suitcase in your checked baggage allowance.

You may need to purchase additional bags if flying with your kayak in addition to your standard baggage. Keep in mind, if flying on a Lite fare, that your fare does not include any free checked bags - you will have to add and pay for all bags online before your flight.

You may pre-purchase up to a maximum of 2 additional checked bags ahead of time - if you need more bags, you will only be able to add and pay for them at the airport, at the higher "At the Airport" rate, during check-in:

If your kayak exceeds the 23 kg weight limit (up to a maximum weight of 32 kg), you will be charged an overweight fee, as follows:

Virgin Australia Domestic Overweight Baggage Fee: $50
Virgin Australia Short-Haul International Overweight Baggage Fee: $100 AUD / NZD
