Virgin Australia will accept your surfboard within your checked baggage allowance, as long as it is within the accepted weight limit of 23 kg - otherwise an overweight fee applies (up to a maximum weight of 32 kg).

Your surfboard represents one piece of checked baggage, and may be exchanged for a standard suitcase in your checked baggage allowance. [AMZ asins='B00HTA1Z6C,B00GGPK0V2,B00NIYJF6U,B0053TGSK4']

Virgin Australia’s fleet includes a number of different aircraft types, all of which have slightly different operational limitations that affect the weight and size of the baggage they can carry. Flying with shortboards is not a problem, but longboards may not be accepted on flights when flying on Boeing 737 aircraft:

Aircraft Type - Maximum Length
Boeing 737 - 3.0 metres in length (9'10")
Airbus A320 - 9.8 metres in length (depending on the flexibility of the item)
F100 - 6.0 metres in length (depending on the flexibility of the item)

You may need to purchase additional bags if flying with your board bag in addition to your standard baggage. Keep in mind, if flying on a Lite fare, that your fare does not include any free checked bags - you will have to add and pay for all bags online before your flight.

You may pre-purchase up to a maximum of 2 additional checked bags ahead of time - if you need more bags, you will only be able to add and pay for them at the airport, at the higher "At the Airport" rate, during check-in:
