Lufthansa accepts surfboards, with a different set of fees depending on the length of the board (less than 2 meters, or more than 2 meters)

The fees for shortboards, up to 2 meters, are already very expensive, and for larger surfboards they are even more ridiculous (up to 400 EUR on long-haul intercontinental routes), so we do NOT recommend Lufthansa for flying with surfboards. However, if you have no choice, here is the information for surfboard baggage fees for Lufthansa Airlines. [AMZ asins='B00HTA1Z6C,B00GGPK0V2,B00NIYJF6U,B0053TGSK4']

We recommend that you make an early reservation for the item of sports baggage you wish to take with you. You must register sports baggage up to 24 hours before departure.

Sports baggage can be allowed for in your free baggage allowance provided that the number and weight do not exceed the free baggage specifications for your travel class. However, this does not apply if you are travelling on the Economy Class Light fare.

If it exceeds the free baggage allowance, the below charges apply:

Standard sports baggage fees on Lufthansa (Boards up to 2 meters)
Domestic routes (Germany) - EUR 70 / USD 80
Routes within Europe - EUR 80 / USD 92
Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia - EUR 100 / USD 115

Long intercontinental routes - EUR 250 / USD 287 / CAD 375
