Virgin Australia will accept your bicycle within your free checked baggage allowance, as long as it is within the accepted weight limit of 23 kg.

Your bicycle represents one piece of checked baggage, and may be exchanged for a standard suitcase in your checked baggage allowance. [AMZ asins='B00JEILGMK,B00FRG7Q7W,B018FF6EV0,B00FNSS6QY']

We recommend contacting Virgin Australia before your flight to confirm space and acceptance of your bike box for your flight.

You may need to purchase additional bags if flying with your bike in addition to your standard baggage. Keep in mind, if flying with your bicycle on a Lite fare, please note that your fare does not include any free checked bags - you will have to add and pay for all bags online before your flight. You may pre-purchase up to a maximum of 2 additional checked bags - if you need more bags, you will have to pay for them at the airport, at the higher "At the Airport" rate:

Virgin Australia Domestic Baggage Fees 2023 - Short Flights Less than 3 Hours

Guest Contact Centre: $60
At the Airport: $110

Virgin Australia Domestic Baggage Fees 2023 - Longer Flights 3+ Hours

If your bike box exceeds the 23 kg weight limit (up to a maximum weight of 32 kg), you will be charged an overweight fee, as follows:

Virgin Australia Short-Haul International Overweight Baggage Fee: $100 AUD / NZD

Packing your Bicycle for Virgin Australia
Bicycles will only be accepted as checked baggage if packaged in a hard or soft manufactured bike box. Bike boxes may be purchased at the airport check-in counter for $25, subject to availability. We recommend packing your bicycle at least 24 hours before to ensure it is ready on time.

Generally, the following packing instructions are recommended when flying with your bicycle on Virgin Australia:

Remove the front wheel
Turn handle bars sideways, and secure to frame.
Remove pedals
Lower or remove seat post
Remove any accessories
Deflate bicycle tyres

When packing a bike, remember to:

Place any loose accessories such as pedals or water bottles into a bag then place in the box. Ensure that only bike parts are packed in the box.
Seal the box, and label it with your name, and contact phone number.
Ensure no part of the bike is protruding out of the box.

If you want to fly with an E-Bike, please contact the airline ahead of time. It is likely that your E-Bike will not be accepted - Batteries larger than 160 Wh are not permitted in either checked baggage nor as carry-on. You may be able to bring an E-Bike on your trip, but you will have to leave the battery at home.

If a bike is not packed according to Virgin Australia's requirements, or is not checked in prior to one hour before departure, it will not be possible to accept the bike for travel.
